Officer's Quarter, now museum
Inside Officer's Quarter

Monday, September 9th, we drove west of Oklahoma City to Fort Reno off of Route 66. This fort was also part of General Sherman’s winter campaign and preceded Fort Sill in 1868 as a military camp to facilitate getting hostile Indian tribes onto reservations.  It was established as a military post in 1874 to protect the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, with permanent buildings being constructed starting in 1876. Troops from the fort, including another regiment of Buffalo Soldiers, were instrumental in directing an orderly transition of Indians from reservations to individual farms, ranches and towns, and were the major force in supervising the Land Run of 1889. It served as two remount depots breeding and training horses and mules for all branches of the military from 1908 to 1947, when it became an agricultural research station. It also served as a German prisoner of war camp in WWII.

Post Chapel

Much of the fort has been restored, and activities like weddings held in this chapel, take place on the site throughout the year.  There was a lot of wind blowing off the plain while we were there today.

Bass Pro Shop
After lunch we went Bass Pro Shop in Oklahoma City.  It was interesting because the taxidermy they display all over the store is indigenous to the area.  Out front of the store we caught the free downtown metro bus and rode it around.  The bus driver was friendly and pointed out interesting places along the way when he found out we were from out of town. Then we went back to the campground to do laundry and relax.
