Taos Pueblo

Saturday, September 14th, we headed northeast along the Rio Grande River Canyon to Taos Pueblo, the only living Native American community. The multi-storied adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years. It is situated on a small stream which flows through the middle of the pueblo compound, which is part of a 95,000 acres reservation belonging to the tribe.  About 4,500 people live in the reservation and about 20 people (4-5 families) still live in the original pueblo.  Taos Pueblo's most prominent structures are two multi-storied residential complexes or reddish-brown adobe.

San Geronimo Mission Church, built in 1850 is also in the pueblo.  There happened to be a wedding there while we were there.

The drive along the Rio Grande River Canyon was beautiful in a rugged way; I have never seen so many rocks.  We found a side road that went down into the canyon following the river for several miles. The weather prediction was for rain again today, but the weather cleared and the sun even came out, making the drive all the more beautiful.
